Leroc Surrey Dance Community

Welcome to Leroc Surrey

We're a welcoming dance community based across Surrey, bringing together people who love ballroom, Latin, and social dancing. Whether you've been dancing for decades or have never set foot on a dance floor, you'll find a place here. Our weekly socials take place in village halls and community centres around Guildford, Woking, Epsom, and surrounding towns.

The name Leroc comes from the French pronunciation of 'rock' – a nod to the jive and rock 'n' roll roots that inspired many modern partner dances. We focus on accessible, relaxed dance styles that anyone can pick up, with an emphasis on enjoying the music and the social aspect rather than competition or performance. Most of our members come alone and find it easy to join in, as we rotate partners during classes and encourage everyone to dance with everyone.

Our Dance Styles

We teach and dance a variety of ballroom and Latin styles, including waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, cha-cha, rumba, jive, and salsa. Classes are structured so that beginners learn the basics while more experienced dancers can refine their technique or learn variations. The focus is always on leading and following clearly, so you can dance comfortably with different partners.

You don't need to bring a partner or wear special shoes – just come in comfortable clothing and footwear that lets you pivot easily. Many members wear simple leather-soled shoes or trainers. We play a mix of classic and contemporary music, from swing era standards to current chart hits adapted for ballroom rhythms.

Weekly Sessions and Events

Our main weekly social runs every Thursday evening from 7:30pm to 10:00pm at various community venues. We start with a beginner-friendly class for the first hour, then open the floor for freestyle dancing. There's a break halfway through for tea, coffee, and biscuits – a good chance to chat and get to know other members.

We also host occasional Saturday workshops focusing on specific dances or techniques, and we organise seasonal social events like summer garden parties and Christmas dances. A few times a year, we arrange coach trips to larger dance events in London or Brighton, which are always popular.

Membership and Pricing

You can drop in as a guest for £8 per session to try us out, or join as a member for better value. Annual membership costs £35 and gives you access to all weekly socials for £5 per session. Members also get discounted entry to our special events and workshops.

We keep prices affordable because we're a community group, not a commercial dance school. Membership fees help cover hall hire, music licensing, and refreshments. Everyone who helps run Leroc Surrey is a volunteer, and we're always grateful for members who can lend a hand setting up chairs or making tea.

Who We Are

Leroc Surrey started informally about fifteen years ago when a small group of friends who enjoyed ballroom dancing began meeting in a church hall in Cobham. Over time, word spread and the group grew. Today we have around sixty regular members ranging in age from early twenties to late seventies, with most somewhere in between. Some members have been with us from the beginning, while others discovered us recently through local noticeboards or recommendations from friends.

What keeps people coming back is the friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. There's no pressure to perform or compete, and no one minds if you mix up your steps. We're here because we enjoy dancing and the social side – catching up with friends, meeting new people, and spending an evening doing something active and enjoyable. Several lasting friendships have formed through the group, and we've even had a couple of weddings between members over the years.

Getting Started

If you're thinking of joining us, the easiest way is to come along to a Thursday session. Arrive at 7:15pm so you have time to sign in and find your bearings before the class starts. We'll introduce you to a few friendly faces, and you'll be dancing within minutes. No need to book in advance for your first visit – just turn up.

For beginners, we recommend attending three or four sessions to get a feel for the basic steps and rhythms. After that, you'll be comfortable enough to join the freestyle dancing and try different partners. If you have questions beforehand, drop us an email and we'll get back to you within a day or two.
